Project description

Tasman Aluminium were engaged to supply and install the aluminium joinery for a small but challenging residential project in Cambridge.

The house is located in a commercial/retail area, within the town centre. It is unique for its appearance, which features a brick wall to its exterior (with no doors or windows), and it’s layout, which features three internal courtyards within the house. The interior rooms open onto the courtyards through large, full-height, glazed sliding and hinged doors, which gives the house a very open and bright feeling.

The centre courtyard is the main outdoor living space that the owners use, and the open plan living room and kitchen open directly onto it. The goal was to allow the courtyard and the interior rooms to feel like one large space that was both indoor and outdoor—to achieve this we used sliding doors that slide into wall pockets (so they’re hidden from view when open) and an over-cladding sliding door. The frames for these doors are recessed into the ceiling, walls and floor, which provides a flush threshold between indoor and outdoor.

The rooms opening onto the front (entry) courtyard feature a combination of full-height sliding and an oversized pivoting entry door.

Designing and installing this joinery required comprehension of the architectural goals of the project and exceptional skill in manufacturing and installing the joinery.

Summary of merits

  • Most importantly, the design, detail and installation of the joinery enhances the design of the house.
  • The joinery head/jamb/sill construction details are all custom, non-standard details which required careful consideration and design to allow them to achieve both weathertightness and aesthetic-design requirements.
  • Sliding/stacking doors and pivoting entry door are all over-sized, full-height items; head/ jamb/sills are recessed into the ceiling/wall/floors; timber jamb liners are omitted are replaced with square-stopped plasterboard reveals; door pull handles and locks are custom, non-standard items; some sliding doors recess into wall pockets so they’re concealed from view when open, others slide in front of wall claddings.
